From last night Newcastle Herald journalists were joined by their collegues from the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Illawarra Mercury in striking in protest of Fairfax’s decision to cut costs by almost halving its production workforce and moving the rest of the best to New Zealand.
For 150 years the Newcastle Herald has supported the Hunter, and many of the people behind the paper now face redundancy - regardless of the fact that the team behind the Newcastle Herald are a small, dedicated group of staff who are passionate about their community and who, on a daily basis, create the strongest performing and biggest moneyspinner in the Fairfax group.
Please come and support your local newspaper by being at Civic Park at 1pm on Saturday. If you can’t make it personally, perhaps your friends can. Come one come all. The more fuss we make, the more chance we have of changing the minds of the board.
